Double Trouble

Jeremiah 2:13 (New International Version) 13 "My people have committed two sins:
They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.

Sin is always double trouble, and Jeremiah used a powerful illustration in this verse to address both of those troubles.

First, when God’s people forsook him, they lost fellowship with God. That means they abandoned what they were once devoted to. Now they have lost a great opportunity for spiritual, moral and ethical maturity. These people had grown stagnant, thus producing no fruit in their lives.

Second, what they substituted for God’s way of life is not just neutral, it is negative. As Jeremiah put it, their own cistern (vessels) cannot hold water (or living water for that matter). Their search for fulfillment without God was futile it was useless. They ended up with failure and oppressed because of the situations in their lives. Inevitably following other gods and idols and turning their backs on the true God.

When we substitute our own wisdom for God’s wisdom, we do not just lose the opportunity to grow and mature, we end up developing counter-productive lifestyles. Lifestyles that allow iniquity to reign over us, lifestyle that hinder our assignment, our relationships and our finances. Instead of our lives taking on quality, our lives without God seem to leak! Over time, we lose quality of life.

Think of your life as being as dynamic, as Jeremiah described here. Our lives are in constant state of change, whether that change be positive or negative, toward God or away from God. I am writing to tell you God offers you growth. Disobedience, today, will only result in wasting away.

Let me ask you, do you feel like you are getting nowhere? Having trouble making decisions? Still struggling with the same old issues?

That presents a clear choice, doesn’t it?

Make your stand today. It’s time for change!! Something has to change!!
